My name is Alisande.
I'm living and working in the house of Norman who is a limner (illuminator) and scrivener (scribe), and his wife Michelle who is also an artist - a paintress.
I'm assisting them in their daily work, such as grinding pigments and making glue. And of course they teach me the art of painting, illuminating and calligraphy which is very exciting for me.
They seem to be pleased with my progress and tell me very often that I have a lot of giftedness.
Well, … they are the masters and can certainly appraise my efforts … but nevertheless I'm not always happy about the results of my exercises … I'm afraid I need a lot more practice …
Now, as to my other tasks at the studio:
As an apprentice and assistant I have to work around the house, clean and tidy up. That means dusting, wiping, cleaning colour dishes, cleaning and maintaining all the brushes and tools, taking care of proper storage of pigments and many other materials.
Day in and day out!
Definitely not exactly rousing … though I have to admit that all this is rather important in the course of our work ...
However, besides painting and writing, which is my all-time pleasure, I like it much more when they launch me to purchase the materials they need for work, which means I have to go to the parchment maker, I have to get the colours and the inks, I have to acquire goose quills, swan quills, gold leaf and other items. This gives me the opportunity to have a little stroll in our place and to chat a bit with my friends Anna, Laeticia and Sandrine, when I happen to meet them … (and don't worry too much about passing this on to my masters right away). Sometimes I have to run errands in our neighbouring town, which are welcome alternations to my daily routine.
Another task of mine is to act model to Norman and Michelle.
It's sometimes a bit strenuous to remain in the same pose for ages, but nevertheless, we always have a lot of fun. I really like it, and so it's mostly me posing when they need to depict a character in a particular bearing or when they need to sketch hands or feet …
